2001: 8 nominations, 2 wins

THE CRIBBIES GO TO WAR
'Basterds,' 'Locker' Lead Noms; 'Avatar' Blue

The Virtual Crib suited up for battle today as the Twelfth Annual Cribbie Nominations, Celebrating Achievement in Filmmaking, Acting, and Hotness, were announced. Quentin Tarantino's WW2 laff riot INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS scalped the competition with 11 nominations, while 10 nominations for Kathryn Bigelow's intense Iraq War drama THE HURT LOCKER were blasted all over the place -- including a most surprising nomination in the coveted Get It On category.

The Crib really loved sci-fi this year as well, as Duncan Jones' MOON (7 noms) and the South African prawn-rights drama DISTRICT 9 (5 noms) joined BASTERDS and LOCKER as Best Picture nominees. MOON also scored an unprecedented acting trifecta, as Sam Rockwell was nominated for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Male Performance in a Bit Part or Cameo for his roles as Sam Bell, Sam Bell, and Sam Bell. It's a triumph for Rockwell, whose only previous Cribbie nomination was for Worst Actor in 2006.

But while the Cribbies rewarded movies about war, and movies about space, gazillions-earning AVATAR -- a war movie in space -- scared up just one nomination, which is to say, as many nominations as were received by MUNICH, which came out in 2005. The fifth Best Picture nomination went to UP, but Pixar has an uphill climb if it wants to win its second consecutive Best Picture Cribbie (following last year's WALL-E) -- UP only received two nods.

Other films doing well in the nominations included Spike Jonze's furry fantasia WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, which collected five nods; Greg Mottola's coming-of-age story ADVENTURELAND, which garnered four; and the quiet North Carolina-based drama GOODBYE SOLO, which scored two nominations.

Leading the pack for the coveted Get It On awards was THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, whose two nominations will force Virtual Crib members to decide once and for all the question that has divided the nation: Team Jacob or Team Edward? As for the women, in an unprecedented development, THE HURT LOCKER's Kathryn Bigelow was nominated not only for Best Director but for the Get It On category, leading to its temporary renaming as Actress or Directress With Whom You Most Want to Get it On. "That movie was amazing," confirmed a Cribbies official, "and Kathryn Bigelow is smokin'."

Among the 25 nominees for inclusion in the Cribbies Hall of Awesome are Bill Murray, Jane Campion, Joe Biden, and Aliens Who Seem Like Monsters But Then Later You Find Out That People Are The Real Monsters, Man. Films up for consideration to be added to the Cribbies Canon include POINT BREAK, MEET THE FEEBLES, and YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, plus two trilogies with nothing in common other than that they are trilogies: Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD, and Krzysztof Kieslowski's TROIS COULEURS.
